There is somebody in my family who is learning to become a filmmaker. My boy, who is now 20 years old, has desired to make movies since his early teens. He has interest and dedication as well as a lot of natural talent. However, being dyslexic, he has never performed well in the traditional school atmosphere, and the thought of attending film school was difficult to him. Even so, his passion has driven him to find other ways to learn.

So he did what anyone with a desire ought to do in the first place: he took obligation for his own dream, and became, in a sense, his own teacher.

When he was on second grade my son started homeschooling and with the discovery of his dyslexia we need to use alternative methods of teaching for him. When he made a solid commitment to learn to be a director, we turned "home school" into a "film school" of sorts, tailoring his curriculum toward moviemaking. We made a top quality camera and pc an investment We turned movies into classes and read many books on filmmaking and storytelling aloud and we also talked about ideas for a film. While we are at this ,my son was amazed at the fact that most of his favorite directors never even made it to film school. If they could do it, he supposed, he can do it.

Making two short films was probably the most significant aspect of his filmmaking education. He used the stories in his mind and wrote a script. He used a storyboard for his script and plotted the sequence of the shots, just like in the textbook. Friends and family became cast and team, and on one occasion he even held a casting call at a local modeling school. He scouted for shooting areas and got the needed permission to film there. During the first short film, he dealt with many issues and a lot of stress, as he experienced firsthand the reality of what it takes to make a movie. However, on the second movie he made he was more at ease and knew better. He learned how to anticipate, take things gently, make the necessary changes when the situation calls for it. He acted like a pro on the set.

Presently, my son's second short film has gained national recognition through national competition in several film festivals. He plans to use his short film as an introduction to individuals who might give him the backing he needs for his first full-length movie he is currently working on. This is the story of how my son became a filmmaker.
